This is a nurturing environment where children, staff, parents and governors know each other and share a common understanding of the School’s purpose – to ‘aim high’ and through shared understanding of Gospel values, ensure that the potential of every child is fully achieved. Our children are happy, sociable, well-behaved and value our diversity, which enriches everything we do. We are recognised as ‘outstanding’ by the local authority and are confident this will be endorsed at our next Ofsted inspection.

Ethos and Values

Notes from the School's RE Advisor

As Parents, Staff and Governors . . .
“We plant the seeds that one day will grow.
We water seeds already planted,
Knowing that they hold future promise.
We are prophets of a future not our own.”
(Oscar Romero)
. . . inspired by the light of our Catholic Christian Faith.
St. Mary Magdalen’s is a Roman Catholic School and our Mission is to promote Jesus Christ as the centre of our lives in all that we do individually and as a School community.  We strive to recognise and develop the talents, gifts and skills of those who teach, learn and govern in our School.  We strive to develop links with parents and to engage them in their child’s learning and spiritual development.  Every member of our School community deserves love and encouragement in developing their full potential.  We recognise our place in the wider community and strive to engage with it in a spirit of equality and tolerance.
Purpose and Values
  1. Our School is ‘Christ Centred’. Whatever we do, we think of Jesus and try to follow in his way.
  2. Our School is an evangelising community. We proclaim the ‘Good News’ to let everyone know Jesus died for us.
  3. Our purpose is to provide a quality education where high standards are an expectation; learning experiences develop the ‘whole child’ and enable them to reach their full and unique potential.
  4. Our purpose is to educate and prepare our children for adult life, encouraging the development of confident, complete and loving individuals.
  5. Our School creates a welcoming and engaging environment where children feel safe, happy and excited to learn.
  6. Our School values everyone, respecting and celebrating diversity.
  7. Our purpose is to share an understanding of what is right and wrong based on the teachings of Jesus Christ. Above all we value justice, forgiveness, love, respect and trust.
  8. We value our parishes, families and wider community by working together and supporting each other.
Key Theme
  • Faith in God - making God part of our daily lives; seeking guidance and reassurance from God in whatever we do; trusting that God will look after us; thanking God; knowing God loves us no matter what; and building an understanding of faith
  • Work and achieve - making a difference; succeeding; striving for excellence; growing to be good people; taking care of our environment; knowing God is walking beside us
  • Belief in ourselves - loving and trusting ourselves; trying our best at all times; believing anything is possible; being confident and positive; praising and encouraging; having courage to manage challenge and achieve goals; and looking for gifts and talents in everyone
  • Love for each other - being fully part of God's wider family; following Christ's example in loving everyone, whatever their colour or creed; treating others as ourselves; being caring and respectful of everyone; showing compassion and forgiveness; and looking out for each other
British Values

The Government has published Guidance on Promoting British Values in Schools.  The Catholic Education Service's guidance on this is available here.
The School has always taken this duty seriously and addresses this requirement in a number of ways - including through RE teaching about other faiths, through our annual School Council elections and citizenship activities, through our fundraising and links with the wider community.  We work hard to ensure that all our children grow, through their time at the School, into well-rounded individuals with a balanced perspective on life, respectful of others and of the cultural diversity in which they live - all grounded in a strong Catholic faith.
