This is a nurturing environment where children, staff, parents and governors know each other and share a common understanding of the School’s purpose – to ‘aim high’ and through shared understanding of Gospel values, ensure that the potential of every child is fully achieved. Our children are happy, sociable, well-behaved and value our diversity, which enriches everything we do. We are recognised as ‘outstanding’ by the local authority and are confident this will be endorsed at our next Ofsted inspection.

Head Teacher's Newsletter December 2017

It has been a very busy but enjoyable term as Head teacher at St Mary Magdalen’s Catholic Primary School. All of our classes have been very busy learning and working hard to make the progress expected of them. We were recently listed as the 146 school out of the top 250 schools in The Sunday Times. This is an excellent achievement and one that we are very proud of. This would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of the staff and parents at St Mary Magdalen’s.

We have worked very closely with our Church holding Masses such as Harvest and Remembrance Mass. We are attending Mass every month which is very important for our children. We believe that our pupils need to fully participate in Mass such as writing their own bidding prayers and reading in Church.

We had a visit from a member of staff from Southwark Education Commission and his main findings were:

The School Council help make decisions for the school and offer ideas to improve school life.
Pupils are very positive about the school.
The pupils felt that their Religious Education lessons helped them to connect to God.
The Years 5 and 6 pupils modelling behaviour in Mass was a lovely feature.
There is a strong commitment from school leaders to support Catholic life within the school.
The engagement and involvement of pupils to be involved in school improvement is strong.

The school has been able to purchase new notice boards for all parents to see the events happening in school. We have a new mission statement board arriving very shortly. The mission statement was written by our School Council so please take the time to read it. We have also ordered a new world map to replace the older map of the British Isles. All of these have been bought by our PTA from the fundraising efforts in school.

We have recently become an Information School for Partners in Excellence which is a great honour. This means that any schools can request to visit us and see how we are implementing PiXL within our school. We recently held an information meeting for many Head Teachers in Lewisham to explain how we use PiXL to ensure excellent progress and attainment for all of our pupils.

Many classes have been on educational visits such as visiting The Royal Albert Hall, Lewisham Training Kitchens, The Houses of Parliament and Royal Greenwich Observatory. We always rely on parents to volunteer to accompany our visits as we often travel on public transport to keep the costs down. We continue to build links with Lewisham Environmental Department to develop local studies and in Greenwich Park as part of the Mission Invertebrates. Most of our visits are free or have a minimum cost which ensures the cost will not be prohibitive and the pupils will enjoy their local area.

The PTA has been busy holding events such as film night and cake sales. We are always open to new events, so please use the suggestion box in the School foyer  (bought by the PTA) to write your ideas.  We are also hopeful that all parents will support the school in fund raising and supporting events within the school. Our School staff have organised successful Bingo nights which bring our school Community together. We have also held charity fundraising events such as for Macmillan Cancer Support and The British Legion.
All the classes have been preparing for our Christmas activities such as the Nativity for Key Stage 1 and EYFS and our Carol service in Key Stage 2. Please look on the School blog for up to date information concerning forthcoming events.

On behalf of all the staff of St Mary Magdalen’s, I would like to wish you all a Holy Christmas and a happy and fulfilling New Year.

Best wishes and God Bless

Mrs Saunders

A Christmas Prayer

Lord, just like Baby Jesus,
I ever long to be,
Resting in your loving arms,
Trusting in your love for me.
You are the Light of the World and if we follow you,
We will never walk in darkness.
